A contract machine shop is machining components for a mining equipment manufacturer. They are using a Makino VMC MV30 running with 300 PSI water soluble oil coolant to machine a gear case made out of T1 armor plate.
Previously the customer was using a Guhring RT-800 drill running at the following parameters: 2000 RPM, 289 SFM, 0.006 IPR, and 12.0 IPM. The tool drilled a 1.25″ deep hole with a 0.5510″ diameter. The tool had a cycle time of 16 seconds with peck cycle and a life of 250 holes. Unsatisfied with their current process, the customer wanted to decrease their cost of production.
AMEC recommended the GEN3SYS™ High Penetration Drilling System using insert item #5C114H-14 with holder #60314H-.075 running at a speed of 1525 RPM, 220 SFM, 0.010 IPR, and 15.25 IPM. The results were outstanding. Not only did the GEN3SYS™ tool lower cycle time to 5 seconds and eliminate the peck cycle, it also increased tool life to 300 holes. The customer also lowered their cost of production and received a total cost savings of $877.19 or 46.5%.
Due to the successful performance of the AMEC tooling, the customer succeeded in lowering their cost of production while also reducing cycle time and increasing tool life.
