An End-user is manufacturing components for construction equipment using an Okuma HMC running with 1000 PSI through-spindle semi-synthetic coolant. They are machining a precision pin made out of medium carbon steel.
Previously the customer was using an AMEC T-A® drill insert item #151N-19 with holder #24010H-25FM running at the following parameters: 970 RPM, 190 SFM, 0.012 IPR, and 11.64 IPM. The tool created a 4.13″ deep hole with a 19 mm diameter. The tool had a cycle time of 21 seconds and a life of 253 holes. Looking for improvements, the customer wanted to reduce cycle time.
AMEC suggested the GEN3SYS™ High Penetration Drilling System using insert item #5C118H-19 and holder #60716H-25CM running at a speed of 1634 RPM, 320 SFM, 0.016 IPR, and 26.14 IPM. The tool had a cycle time of 9.5 seconds and a life of 569 holes. The results were excellent. The GEN3SYS™ tool reduced cycle time and increased tool life while maintaining the same excellent hole quality as in the previous process. The customer also lowered their cost of production and saved a total of $2,954.24 or 48.9%.
