T-A® Drilling System Low Carbon Steel
The End-user is manufacturing equipment utilized in the salt and coal mining industries. The customer was machining a track shoe made out of low carbon steel using a Mori Seiki HMC running with 300 PSI thru-spindle coolant.
Previously the customer was using an AMEC T-A® super cobalt drill insert item #152H-1.015-IN and holder running at the following parameters: 600 RPM, 159 SFM, 0.012 IPR, and 7.20 IPM. The tool drilled a 7.0″ deep hole with a 1.0150″ diameter. The tool had a cycle time of 58.3 seconds and a life of 100 holes. Seeking to streamline their production while maintaining their existing excellent hole quality, the customer wanted to increase tool life and lower their cost of production.
AMEC's Solution
AMEC recommended a T-A® carbide drill insert item #1C52H-1.015-IN that utilized the previously used holder item #25020S-125F running at a speed of 1200 RPM, 319 SFM, 0.015 IPR, and 18.0 IPM. The results were excellent. The T-A® tool reduced the cycle time to 23.3 seconds and increased the tool life to 300 holes while maintaining the previous excellent hole quality. The customer succeeded in decreasing their cost of production and saved a total of $4052.24.
By increasing productivity and decreasing downtime, the customer was able to achieve their goals and generate a total cost savings of 55%. Once again, AMEC has proven their dedication to providing their customer with the best tooling available.
