The Challenge
A customer is a large structural steel and ductwork specialty contractor in the construction industry. They manufacture I-Beams and H-Beams made from structural steel using a Peddinghaus with soluble oil mist coolant. The customer’s annual production is over 100,000 tons of steel beams, bars, and ductwork.

Tool used: Cleveland twist drill 1-3/16 HSS TS
  • Hole diameter = 1.1875″
  • Hole depth = 0.8″
  • 350 RPM
  • 0.003 IPR
  • 109 SFM
  • 1.05 IPM
  • Tool life = 500 holes
  • Cycle time = 45.7 seconds
The customer wanted to increase productivity while decreasing the overall cost of production.
The Solution
Allied recommended using the Original T-A structural steel drill.

Tool used: Original T-A structural steel drill insert (item 152A-0106-SS) with holder (24020H-004IS100)
  • 320 RPM
  • 0.011 IPR
  • 99 SFM
  • 3.52 IPM
  • Tool life = 500 holes
  • Cycle time = 13.6 seconds
The Advantages
The Original T-A structural steel solution reduced the machine’s cycle time and also lowered the cost of production while increasing the overall productivity.
  • Decreased cycle time by 70.2%
  • Total cost savings = $427.56 or 49.9%
