The Challenge
The customer manufactures tube sheets made from Titanium (185-190 Bhn) using a horizontal Tarus heavy duty drilling machine operating at 2000 PSI with an oil based coolant. The customer is testing different tooling.
  • Hole diameter = 0.758" (19.25mm)
  • Hole depth = 15" (381mm)

Tool 2: Ingersoll BTA

None of these tools were able to complete the operation to the customer requirements. All three tools failed with unacceptable hole straightness and tolerances above 0.017", which rendered the tube sheets unusable.
The Solution
Allied recommended the BT-A Drill.

Tool used: BT-A drill holder (#1 series) with GEN2 T-A® insert (item 4C11H-.7580-HE)
  • 700 RPM
  • 0.0045 IPR (0.11 mm/rev)
  • 3.15 IPM (80.01 mm/min)
  • Tool life = 27 holes per insert (86 linear inches)
  • Cycle time = 58 seconds
