The Challenge
The customer machines cylinders made from 1045 steel using a Technidrill BTA machine operating at 900 PSI with semi-synthetic coolant.

Tool used:  Ingersoll brazed BTA head
  • Hole diameter = 1.375” (34.9mm)
  • Hole depth = 17.7" (449.6mm) blind hole
  • 800 RPM
  • 0.0074 IPR (0.19 mm/rev)
  • 5.9 IPM (149.9 mm/min)
  • Cycle time = 2 minutes 43 seconds (per hole)
  • Tool life = 750 linear inches
The Ingersoll tools had difficulty drilling a straight hole, and the customer produced few parts that had the drill actually come out the side of the cylinder.
The Solution
Allied recommended the BT-A Drill.

Tool used:  BT-A drill (1.375” 807 series) using T-A® insert (item 4C12H-0112-HE)
  • 750 RPM
  • 0.0118 IPR (0.30 mm/rev)
  • 8.85 IPM (224.8 mm/min
  • Cycle time = 1 minute 59 seconds (per hole)
  • Tool life = 900 linear inches
The Advantages
The BT-A Drill delivered a much straighter hole with less than 0.010 variance in cylinder wall thickness.
  • Reduced cost per hole from $1.60 to $1.36
  • Increased tool life by 20%
  • Total cost savings = 15%
