The Challenge
The customer machines A36 mold backing plates using a DOOSAN DB 130CX horizontal boring mill with 200 PSI through tool coolant.

Tools used in the process:
  • Center drill
  • Standard twist drill
  • Circular interpolation tool
  • Finish bore operation
Overall:
  • Hole diameter (holes 1-3) = 2"
  • Hole diameter (holes 4-6) = 3.6"
  • Hole depth (holes 1-3) = 3.5"
  • Hole depth (holes 4-6) = 4"
  • Cycle time = 4 to 8 hours
In order to compete with off-shore mold makers, the customer needed a solution to reduce the cycle time and increase production.
The Solution
Allied recommended the combination of the Revolution Drill and the Opening Drill.
Tools used:
  • Holes 1-3:  Revolution Drill holder (R34X22-150L) with inserts (item OP-05T308-H)
    • 2,200 RPM
    • 0.0055 IPR (0.14 mm/rev)
    • 12.1 IPM (307.3 mm/min)
  • Holes 4-6:  Opening Drill holder (item OP3-1L-CV50) with inserts (OP-05T308-H)
    • 1,200 RPM
    • 0.0055 IPR (0.14 mm/rev)
    • 6.6 IPM (167.6 mm/min)
  • Overall:
    • Cycle time: under 5 minutes
The Advantages
The tooling solution made a huge difference for the customer, saving them hours of machining time.
  • Reduced the operation time from hours to minutes
  • Both drills utilized the same inserts, which reduced inventory requirements
