The Challenge
The customer manufactures turbine components made from chrome molly alloy steel using a Super 8 VMC with water soluble coolant.

Tools used: Kennametal boring bars
  • Hole diameter = 3.5" (88.9mm)
  • Hole depth = 8" (203.2mm)
  • 500 RPM
  • 0.005 IPR (0.127 mm/rev)
  • 2.5 IPM (63.5 mm/min)
  • Tool life = 14 holes
  • Cycle time = 2 hours 59 minutes
  • Cost per hole = $30.89
The boring bar machining process moved too slow. The customer needed to reduce cycle time because the parts were scheduled for quick delivery.
The Solution
Allied recommended the Opening Drill.

Tool used: Opening Drill holder (OP3-1L-BT50) with insert (item OP-05T308-H)
  • 500 RPM
  • 0.005 IPR (0.127 mm/rev)
  • 2.5 IPM (63.5 mm/min)
  • Tool life = 14 holes
  • Cycle time = 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Cost per hole = $18.25
The Advantages
