The Challenge
The customer is machining a turbine housing sensor made from 347L stainless steel. They use a Kiwi HMC with a water soluble coolant-through.

Tools used:
  • Vermont spot drill (0.860″ diameter)
    • Cycle time = 1 minute 30 seconds
    • Tool life = 100 parts
  • Vermont cobalt drill (0.375″ diameter)
    • Cycle time = 1 minute 26 seconds
    • Tool life = 50 parts
  • Vermont cobalt drill (0.4687″ diameter)
    • Cycle time = 1 minute 36 seconds
    • Tool life = 50 parts
  • Line Bore (0.5″ diameter)
    • Cycle time = 7 minutes 18 seconds
    • Tool life = 70 parts
Overall process:
  • Hole depth = 1.25″
  • Cycle time = 11 minutes 50 seconds
  • Tool cost = $50.00
The customer was unahppy with this process and needed to reduce cycle time and decrease tooling costs.
The Solution
Allied recommended the EcoCut tooling.

Tool used: EcoCut holder (EC12R-3.0D 06 H-E) with insert (item XCNT 060202 EN CM40 grade)
