The Challenge
The customer manufactures petroleum compressor pumps from Cast Iron (220 Bhn). They are using a 40 HP lathe with 50 PSI through tool coolant.

Tool used:  Boring bar
  • Hole diameter = 3.25"
  • Hole depth = 4.50"
  • Enlarging of the hole required 2.37" (60.2mm) removal on diameter
  • Number of passes = 11
  • Cycle time = 30 minutes
The customer needed a more efficient method of running this process, and they asked Allied for a solution.
The Solution
Allied recommended the Opening Drill.

  • 449 RPM
  • 0.003 IPR (0.076 mm/rev)
  • 1.35 IPM (00.0 mm/min
  • Number of passes = 1
  • Cycle time = 4 minutes
