The Challenge
A contract machine shop that specializes in turning and drilling is producing components for a large manufacturer of military tanks. The part being machined is a large stainless steel ring. They use a Quick Drill CNC VMC with water soluble coolant.

Tool used: Greenfield 17/32″ taper shank cobalt twist drill with 60 PSI flood coolant
  • Hole depth = 5.0″ deep hole
  • Hole diameter = 0.5312″
  • Peck drilling with a full retract every 0.050″
  • 60 SFM
  • 431 RPM
  • 0.008 IPR
  • 3.45 IPM
  • Cycle time = 10 minutes 8 seconds
  • Tool life = 4 holes
