The Challenge
The customer manufactures components made from 1045 steel using an Okuma vertical machining center with 1000 PSI and through tool water based coolant.

Tool used:  Conventional solid cobalt drill
  • Hole diameter = 0.238" (6.05mm)
  • Hole depth = 1.3" (33.02mm)
  • 1000 RPM
  • 0.003 IPR (0.08 mm/rev)
  • 3 IPM (76.2 mm/min
  • Cycle time = 26 seconds
  • Tool life = 48 holes
The customer needed to reduce cycle time and improve tool life.
The Solution
Allied recommended the ASC 320 solid carbide drill.

Tool used:  ASC 320 drill (item 390M06050A21M)
  • 3000 RPM
  • 0.006 IPR (0.15 mm/rev)
  • 18 IPM (457.2 mm/min)
  • Cycle time = 4.3 seconds
  • Tool life = 2,000 holes
