The Challenge
The customer manufactures automotive components for a specialty truck manufacturer. They use a Giddings & Lewis 35 HP boring mill with minimal coolant pressure to machine an axle weldment made from 1018 low carbon steel.

Tools used: (3) Komet tools of different diameters
  • Komet Twin Cutter (2.120″ diameter)
    • 681 RPM
    • 5.5 IPM
    • Hole depth = 6.00″
  • Komet Twin Cutter (2.360″ diameter)
    • 681 RPM
    • 5.5 IPM
    • Hole depth = 6.00”
  • Komet Twin Cutter (2.480″ diameter)
    • 620 RPM
    • 4.8 IPM
    • Hole depth = 6.00”
  • Overall results
    • Hole diameter = 2.480″
    • Hole depth = 6.00″
    • Cycle time = 3 minutes 25 seconds
Unsatisfied with this process, the customer needed to reduce the number of tools used to complete the operation and also lower their tooling costs.
The Solution
Allied recommended the Opening Drill.
