The Challenge
The customer manufactures landing gears made from 4340 alloy steel (269 Bhn) using a Mazak horizontal lathe with water soluble oil coolant. They were opening a 2.125" hole to 3.75".

Tool used: Sandvik boring bar
  • Hole diameter = 3.75" (95.25 mm)
  • Hole depth = 7" (177.8 mm)
  • 400 RPM
  • 0.012 IPR (0.30 mm/rev)
  • 4.8 IPM (121.92 mm/min)
  • Cycle time = 19 minutes (per part on 13 passes)
  • Tool life = 30 parts
To improve production, the customer needed to decrease the cycle time.
The Solution
Allied recommended the Opening Drill.

Tool used: Opening Drill (item OP3-1L-SS1.5)
  • 509 RPM
  • 0.004 IPR (0.10 mm/rev)
  • 2.04 IPM (51.82 mm/min)
  • Cycle time = 3.5 minutes (per part on 1 pass per hole)
  • Tool life = 30 parts
The Advantages
The Opening Drill provided significant time savings. The cost per hole decreased beyond the customer’s expectations.
